INTRODUCTION
When I set up Rye Watersports in 1986, on windy days, the beaches from Marazine in Cornwall to Camber Sands in East Sussex were ablaze with the brightly coloured sails of windsurfers; now kitesurfers have claimed the ocean … and although windsurfing is still a passion of mine, kitesurfing has become an obsession!
Six years ago, in Cabo Verde, on the remote windswept island of Sal at Shark Beach, we saw fifty or more kites silhouetted against an azure sky, it was at that moment Rye Watersports kitesurfing school was born!

OUR CENTRE
To say our lakeside centre is unique is no exaggeration; most kitesurfing schools operate from a van or shop. Camber Sands, our main teaching beach is only three minutes away. Partners or friends, who don’t want to kitesurf, can spend the day at the lake. They can dinghy sail or windsurf or just sunbathe and enjoy food from our ‘Windy Daze Café’.
And after your kitesurfing lesson it’s perfect for the debrief, chilling out on the decking drinking a beer or enjoying a cappuccino, and watching the sun set over the lake, and the medieval town of Rye.
Rye town, with its cobbled streets, tea shops, bars, art galleries and antique shops, is only a ten minute walk away. A perfect place to while away a few hours, or stay overnight to make a week-end of it.
LOCATION
We run our kitesurfing lessons at Camber Sands, on the Kent and Sussex border; it has consistent onshore breezes throughout the season, and shallow water due to a tidal range of about a mile. This vast sandy expanse and waist deep water enables our pupils to progress rapidly. Because of our position, on the tip of the South East Coast, if the wind changes direction we still have some great beaches in both Kent and Sussex to run our kitesurfing courses from.
INSTRUCTORS
To become a good kitesurfer you initially need a great instructor. I have an experienced team of permanent instructors, ‘Kiteworld’ Test Riders and instructors who teach at global centres during the winter months when our centre is closed. Check out our team page.
EQUIPMENT
The latest kitesurfing equipment is essential for your first introduction to the sport. We only teach with the safest kites on the market – Flexifoils, and the North Rebel, the innovative bow kite which is great for beginners, but also used by pros on the circuit.
SAFETY
As with any extreme sport safety has to be the main consideration. Our centre is BKSA recognised and we also hold an ‘Adventure Activities Licence’ that authorises us to run kitesurfing courses for children.

PRIVATE KITESURFING LESSONS
TWO DAY BKSA KITESURFING COURSE
A typical course starts with initial trainer kite practice. We teach you how to fly kites and understand wind theory. You then move on to inflatables (the North Rebel kite) and you learn ‘set-up’ launching and landing. Body dragging is the next stage, where you pilot the kite upwind and downwind whilst in the water; and finally waterstarts and getting up on the board for your first few runs.
There is a large emphasis on safety and we cover all aspects of self rescue and safe launch sites. This course results in a level 1 or 2 BKSA certificate recognised in centres throughout the world.
THREE DAY BKSA KITESURFING COURSE
Initially run along exactly the same lines as the two day course. The third day gives you more time to concentrate on getting up and riding the board. With all our courses your instructor is next to you in the water enabling you to progress rapidly, and help with any technical problems you might be experiencing.
ONE DAY BOARD SKILLS CLINIC
The Rye Watersports kitesurfing one day clinic is designed at taking you on to the next stage of kitesurfing. Perfect for people who have already done the two or three day course. We can get you riding upwind, improve your kite control, and get you confident, and knowledgeable enough to buy your own kit.
PRIVATE TWO HOUR KITESURFING TUITION
Private courses are for any kitesurfer who wants tuition on a one to one basis. You could be a complete beginner, or wanting to learn the latest tricks around. Our instructors are there to sort you out!
KITESURFING LESSONS/COURSES FOR CHILDREN
We have great success teaching children to kitesurf, they come to us from all over the country to learn as there are only a few centres in the UK authorised to teach under eighteens.
EQUIPMENT
We provide everything you need for your kitesurfing course, all you need to bring is a towel and some old trainers.
POST COURSE HELP
We are always happy to give any advice you might need at the end of your kitesurfing lesson. We have complete kitesurfing packages you can buy, and if you want to buddy up with someone to go to the beach with, we can help you there too.
