2016 august 038In 1986 Margaret Meadowcroft set up Rye Watersports as a teaching centre for windsurfing and dinghy sailing. This large coastal lake, on the Kent and Sussex border by Camber Sands, was the perfect location where constant winds blow straight off the sea, or from the vast expanse of the Romney Marshes.  It soon became known as the premier windsurfing and sailing centre in Southern England. Only one hour from South East London and close to Surrey it’s accessible to everyone in this corner of England. The water area is roughly seventy acres and good in any wind direction.  The access to the water is gently shelving which gives great confidence to beginners.
The newly opened ‘Hoolie Cafe’ is run by Maggie’s daughters Rosie and Beth who are also windsurfing instructors and part of the family team.
Steve, the Centre Manager, co-ordinates activities and promotes and heads up our kids T.15 squad which is run every Sunday throughout the Summer on Sunday mornings.

kitesurfing at rye watersportsStand Up Paddleboarding has become incredibly popular over the last few years and we run BSUPA courses regularly, also a popular addition is our SUP fit sessions held every Wednesday morning and evening.

In 2003 Maggie and her son-in-law George, a senior BKSA kite instructor, established Rye Watersports Kitesurf School. Camber Sands is the main teaching beach, whilst  kitesurfing lessons in Kent are run at Greatstone.  These are two of the top kitesurfing beaches in the UK.

The Centre is only one hour from South London, in an idyllic situation near Camber Sands. The Kent and Sussex coast for sea based kitesurfing and windsurfing lessons is only minutes away.

Rye Watersports is easily accessible if you live in Kent, Sussex, Surrey or London as the centre is easy to reach by road, or rail so a windsurfing lesson or dinghy sailing lesson can be achieved without staying overnight. If you live further afield why not turn your lesson into a holiday, and stay in this glorious part of Kent and Sussex.

dinghy sailing lessonKitesurfing and Windsurfing on the South Coast offers varied conditions, but the shallow waters at Camber Sands and Greatstone provide perfect conditions for lessons whether you’re a beginner or expert. Our dinghy sailing school is always lake based, where sailing skills can be learnt on safe flat waters.

Informal and friendly, our centre is the hub of all our activities. After your lesson chill out on the decking with refreshments from ‘The Hoolie Cafe.  Enjoy our yummy home made cakes and coffee made from freshly ground beans.  We are always on hand to give tips and advice at the end of the day.

‘With the golden beaches of Camber Sands only minutes away, our beautiful lake location, and the Medieval town of Rye nearby, we feel we have everything to offer.’

Rye Watersports is AALA certified authorising us to give kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing lessons to children under eighteen years of age.
